The George awarded “New Zealand’s Leading Boutique Hotel” in the 2007 World Travel Awards
At the Asia/Pacific Ceremony of the 2007 World Travel Awards, The George, Christchurch was once again successful in obtaining the accolade of “New Zealand’s Leading Boutique Hotel”. This is the second successive year that this honour has been bestowed on The George, which shows that its ongoing commitment to consistency and quality is recognised by its peers in the travel industry.
The World Travel Awards were introduced in 1993 to acknowledge the vast contribution and achievement of one of the fastest growing industries in the world and has now become the world’s most comprehensive travel award ceremony. Thousands of travel professionals spread over 190 countries cast hundreds of thousands of votes for their favourite candidates in order to select the overall winners. The World Travel Awards are regarded by those in the industry and their clients alike as the highest recommendation obtainable in the area of travel.
The George ranked 2nd in the Conde Nast Reader’s Choice Awards
Luxury boutique hotel The George, Christchurch was voted one of two best New Zealand hotels in the 2007 “Conde Nast Reader’s Choice Awards”. Furthermore, The George came 11th in Australasia showing undoubtedly that it can hold its own in the international arena.

The George introduces its newly refurbished Park suites
Not keen to rest on its reputation alone The George is continuing its multi-million dollar refurbishment programme, and its latest project has been the unveiling of 2 luxurious new Park Suites situated on the fourth floor with stunning views over Hagley Park and the Avon River.
Designed by Warren & Mahoney at a cost of $200 000 per suite, the result is a metamorphosis into up to the minute chic contemporary interiors. These newly created suites offer all of the features expected of luxury accommodation. Each suite is reminiscent of a dream apartment rather than a hotel room, with its separate living and bedroom areas. The en-suite bathroom is state of the art, featuring heated floors and mirrors, large spa baths, double shower heads, and sensor lighting. The bedroom is fitted with a Californian king bed complete with luxury bedding (which has the ability to be split into two king single beds). A stunning state of the art Bose home entertainment system, Bose wave radios in the bedroom and bathroom, and not one but two LCD televisions (32” screen in the bedroom and a 37” inch screen in the living area), high speed internet and wireless connection, add to the contemporary theme. Special touches such as granite benches, custom made gas fireplaces and art by renowned contemporary New Zealand artists grace the living area. Other unique features certain to please the discerning guest include a full size bar, trouser press and electronic safe.
The George has received many significant international awards in recent years. In 2006 and 2007 The George was awarded the best New Zealand hotel in the Conde Nast Gold List. The World Travel Awards in 2006 named The George as “New Zealand’s Best Boutique Hotel”.
In 2005 it was voted one of only two best New Zealand hotels in U.S. Travel + Leisure magazine’s top 25 hotels in a New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific survey. Furthermore, Travel + Leisure named The George one of the “500 Best Hotels in the World” in both 2003 and 2004, and one of the worlds top 80 hotels (and top 10 in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific) for service. The magazine’s readers also awarded The George, ‘Best Hotel in New Zealand 2002”. While in 2002 and 2005 Business Asia magazine readers voted The George “Best Business Hotel in Asia” (New Zealand section).
Starting in 2005 a multi-million dollar redesign programme began, including new interiors for The George’s entrance foyer, lobby, and 50 on Park restaurant and bar, featuring outstanding works of art from New Zealand’s leading contemporary artists. Business and conference facilities were also completely redesigned and fitted with state of the art technology.
The hotel’s guest rooms have been revamped to feature the latest world trends in guest room and bathroom layout and interior design, as well as modern in-room technology. All guest rooms are equipped with 32” LCD flat screen televisions offering the latest digital movie system. Wireless internet access is available in all guest rooms and throughout the entire hotel.
Pescatore, The George’s signature restaurant has had a decade-long reputation as one of New Zealand’s finest contemporary dining rooms, with past executive chefs including Rick Rutledge-Manning and Hamish Brown. Pescatore’s chefs also work in the hotel’s innovative all-day dining restaurant 50 on Park, and provide the same level of expertise for function catering, private dining and room service in the hotel.
