This year the New Zealand Truffle Association has chosen to hold its 2009 Conference and Gala Dinner in Christchurch. While we can’t all attend the exclusive “4 Chefs & a Truffle” gala dinner to be held at The George, food enthusiasts and the uninitiated alike will have the unique opportunity to experience the same menu after the event during the week beginning 21st July.
Andrew Brown -The George’s Executive Chef
Reon Hobson – Pescatore Chef de Cuisine
Jonny Schwass – Owner/ Head Chef Restaurant Schwass
Oliver Jackson – Pegasus Bay Winery Head Chef
All collaborate in what equates to a Chef’s Jam session giving you the chance to try each of the 4 dishes that will be offered at the Gala Dinner, for a limited time. Each of these talented Chefs will create a dish that reflects his interpretation of the ideal truffle dish. The dishes will be cleverly matched with the exceptional Pegasus Bay wines.
As we all know truffles are up there with caviar, foie gras and oysters in the food world and are on every foodies ‘must try before I die list’. However what many people don’t realise is that New Zealand has a growing truffle industry so you don’t need to jet off to the continent to indulge in this heady experience. In fact New Zealand produces the Perigord black truffle, and more recently the Burgundy truffle and Bianchetto white truffle, with one of the largest truffieres in close proximity to Christchurch.
To celebrate New Zealand truffles, for a short time (less than a week and while truffle stocks last) Canterbury restaurants Pescatore, Restaurant Schwass & Pegasus Bay Winery & Restaurant will add the specially created truffle dishes to their menus giving you the chance to indulge in the truly sublime phenomenon which is the truffle. So do you and your friends a favour and make a reservation to try one or a combination of these incredible dishes. Those truffle worshipers who select the truffle tasting menu will receive a booklet containing the recipes to take home. Prices for the dishes and tasting menu will be equivalent in each of the venues.
For those who must have more and wish to unravel all of the truffles secrets, The George team up with The New Zealand Truffle Association, noted truffle authority Gareth Renowden and Mercato, to offer a series of stimulating master classes on Friday 17th July that set about demystifying the truffle and include tastings and wine matches.
