The hotel is named after Sir George Seymour, one of the First Four Ships to arrive in Canterbury in 1850, carrying immigrants from the United Kingdom. Formerly known as the Arlington Motor Lodge (1974), Avon Park Motor Hotel (1977), Park Hotel (1982), and, since 1987, The George, the hotel has a rich history.
Managed by Brook Serene & Co. Ltd, The George Christchurch is owned by Toranomon Jitsugyo Kaikan Co. Limited (TJK), with Mr. Yoshi Kawamura as the owner.

– Anonymous – 2024, Chicago, IllinoisBy far our favorite for the trip. Staff was outstanding and breakfast wonderful. The concierge (Bryan) graciously offered suggestions of what to do while in town. ( Our plans were set but he had no way of knowing that). Turndown service was a pleasant surprise along with the surprise gift of “George” the little teddy bear on each bed with a sweet message. Even the unexpected fire alarm that went off in the middle of the night was handled professionally with a gift of a free night on the next visit.
